This is a reminder that this Saturday @ 4 p.m. we will film the event around Dr. Guy McPherson's speech at the Buena Vista Audubon in Oceanside. Parts of it may be featured in the upcoming film: "Somewhere In New Mexico Before The End Of Time". It's going to be quite a show for those who get the opportunity to attend. Musicians, tribal shamans and native drums...and finally Guy telling the truth as only he can.
It's been a very long journey to this point and I'm only halfway there. If you'd allow me the indulgence I'd like to recount some of that journey with you.
I met Guy last fall when I spent 10 days at his perma-culture settlement in New Mexico. We had been corresponding for months. He was open to the idea of doing a documentary about the message so it came together. While there, Guy introduced me to The Land Trust and they allowed me into their "tribe" for a close look at what voluntary poverty looks like (not what you'd imagine). I also re-discovered what living with animals is like. Ducks, goats chickens bees insects deer and squirrels - life. I don't know how I got any filming done because I found myself taking long afternoon naps.
Many of the people that I filmed and interviewed gave me a condition: that I don't reveal where they live. So I asked: "How about 'Somewhere In New Mexico'?" and they told me "that's fine!" I was also reading Updike's comic turn on dystopian collapse "Toward The End Of Time" so...
After Guy McPherson leaves, I travel north to spend several days with Sherry Ackerman at her Hermitage in Mt. Shasta. I also hope to meet and interview Stan Moore in San Jeronimo. Stan is a self-taught naturalist and raptor specialist who is also a homeless plumber.
What is the goal of the film?: The goal of the film is to present a predicament and some ideas about what we might be able to do about it.
Hypothesis: If the current industrial culture is allowed to run it's course we'll push ourselves and a goodly number of other living systems into extinction.
Are transition groups a viable path? Are these the lifeboats of tomorrow? Will people renounce luxury for the sake of life and the survival of our great-great grand-children?
For me, the message is compelling. I'm in the process of walking away (as soon as I finish this film).
